Here are 5 tips for fixing a water leak on your own. It is possible to repair small leaks without calling a professional even when you are not a great handyman.
Turn off the tap
The first thing to do is to turn off the main water supply to the house or apartment to stop the leak. The water will stop flowing and you can then think calmly and determine the correct technique for plugging the leaks.
Clean the pipe
Before you plug a leak in a pipe, clean it up. Scrape off the paint if necessary, then clean it with methylated spirits. Wait until it is completely dry before starting the repair. Dry it with a cloth and even a hairdryer to remove all the moisture.
Use anti-leak tape
Use waterproof tape to seal the leak. Wrap the ribbon in a spiral, covering half of the previous piece every time your circle around. It must surround the leak and protrude at least 5 cm over the pipe. This technique is effective when the leak is at a pipe or a failed weld.
Use an epoxy putty
Epoxy putty is also effective in stopping a leak. Cut the sticks into two equal parts and knead until you obtain a homogeneous mixture of the two shades. Wrap the bead of paste over the leak, pressing firmly. Leave to dry for 2 hours before reopening the tap and checking that the leak is repaired.
Fixing a leak with elbow grease
To repair a leak on a fitting, you must use two adjustable wrenches. The first will be used to hold the male connector, and the second, to tighten the female connector. If water continues to flow, you should try to replace the gasket.
If the leaks persist after your repairs, call a plumber to fix the problem.
